In It for the Love: The Path to V-O Success

Joan Baker's mantra at "Make Millions with Your Voice", a seminar for aspiring voice-over actors that she hosted Tuesday night, was simply "Because I love it."

The seminar, offered through The Learning Annex and benefiting The Alzheimer's Association, afforded a roomful of aspiring voice-over actors access to a panel of industry experts and talent who assured them that above all else, the key to success was loving voice-over.

The panel opened with the question, "Who's here because someone told you that you had a great voice?," and -- being met by a nearly universal show of hands -- the experts proceeded to describe the tools you really need to start a voice-over career. A healthy voice isn't a bad foundation, but as casting director Sherri Hodes pointed out, "It's not about the words. It's about the emotional content of your voice."

And finding that content comes from years of constant, dedicated study, was an oft-repeated sentiment.

Although, as Baker said, "You don't have to be an actor to do voice-over," it does require a keen understanding of craft and performance. It is not just talking, nor just reading lines, but it is a craft that requires a lifetime of practice for success, she added.

Baker, who offers voice-over coaching, discussed why she still studies. "I love creating real moments," she said, which is indeed the aim of any artist: to get at the thing that makes a construct convincing and an illusion illuminating. This is certainly an elusive ability and is not one inborn in any artist; it requires constant study.

This study can come from something as involved as studying opera (which Baker does), or something as simple as watching the tube.

Sherri Hodes told a story about a man she coached for months without any improvement. She felt downright awful about his lack of progress until he revealed to her that he didn't watch, nor did he own a television. (He didn't come back after that.)

Though lessons are helpful, they get you nowhere unless you are willing to establish a relationship with your craft that you work on every day, much like a marriage.

But even for those who have taken on voice-over vocationally, there are some more practical considerations that the panel touched on.

Voice-over actress and radio personality Valerie Smaldone encouraged scarves in cold weather (to "keep your voice warm") and suggested that the ladies lose the lipstick ("the emollients can slow you down"). For even if you have honed your craft, there are a few things that might give you the edge in an audition.

The panelists agreed that personable types and successful-looking people have the edge if it comes down to separating equals.

Valerie Smaldone; Dancing with the Stars’, Kym Johnson; the New York Jets Flight Crew and Santa Claus will also make a special appearance during the festivities, which is open to the public.

“The NYSE Euronext holiday tree lighting is an outstanding New York tradition and great kick-off to the holiday season,” said Duncan L. The NYSE Euronext holiday tree has been Downtown New York tradition since 1923. This year’s tree, which hails from Ramapo, N.Y., will be adorned with 10,000 multi-colored lights, 250 multi-colored decorative balls bearing the NYSE Euronext logo, and a 6 ft. star, all supported on a 8 ft. by 10 ft. base fashioned as a holiday gift box. Performances will begin at 3 p.m. and continue through 6 p.m. and will be available to television networks via a broadcast feed at Ascent 3419. The tree lighting (from 4:50 p.m. – 5 p.m.) will be available for viewing on www.nyx.com.

Also, adding to the festivities, several of the musicians performing at the tree lighting ceremony will walk the NYSE trading floor and ring the NYSE Closing Bell® at 4 p.m.

New York Stock Exchange Holiday Tradition:

The NYSE community has been celebrating the holiday season for over two centuries – marking the time of year with extended holidays and abbreviated trading hours. In the late nineteenth century, brokers rung in the holiday with tin whistles and horns. Occasionally, the festivities were complemented with a saxophone quartet and a banjo player on the trading floor. In the last few years of the nineteenth century, the holiday festivities subsided and were celebrated in quieter ways, with a religious service at Trinity Church or caroling outside the Exchange.

The first NYSE holiday tree lighting took place in 1923 and has taken place annually. (Note, the tree was not lit in 1973 because of the energy crisis.) Over the years, the NYSE holiday tree lighting ceremonies have grown to include participation by world-class celebrities and musicians as well as listed companies. The NYSE tree lighting ceremony is one of the oldest in New York City and the NYSE holiday tree is one of the most visited attractions during the holidays.

The performance is being presented for the benefit of Premier Performing Arts, a non-profit professional theatre company producing in Westchester County. Broadway bursts on the scene after summer fades

It's obvious that summer is sputtering through it's final days, while autumn waits in the wings, when the Broadway event calendar is filled and the community is anxious to burst out of the summer doldrums.

Kicking off the season on Sunday, September 13th is the annual Broadway on Broadway extravaganza, a free event in the middle of Times Square, celebrating live theater on the great stage. This year's host is Michael McKean, star of the upcoming Tracy Letts' play, Superior Donuts. Michael is known for a variety of roles on stage and screen.

Broadway on Broadway is part of Back to Broadway this month, with a slate of events scheduled to excite theater goers and provide them with added value events.

Broadway on Broadway begins at 11:30 and will feature numbers from some of the long running shows like Wicked, Jersey Boys and Mamma Mia! as well as upcoming musicals: Bye Bye Birdie, Memphis and Finian's Rainbow.

Then the next day on September 14th, it's an event to honor the late Bea Arthur, hosted by legendary actress Angela Lansbury. Numerous celebrities including Norman Lear, Rue McClanahan, Rosie O'Donnell and Chita Rivera will perform at the event, taking place at the Majestic Theater on West 44th Street. The ceremony begins at 1 and the general public will be permitted in on a first come, first served basis.

Terranova at the Fringe

The Fringe Festival is a playwright, actor and director's great resource for training, and honing down a project. With over 200 plays to view in the festival, the choices are vast, and theatre hungry aficionados love to frequent many different venues. I ventured to the Lafayette Street Theater one Wednesday afternoon. Descending a set of stairs to where the theatre is located, I was pleasantly surprised to see a full house present to see a performance of Terranova.

Written by Pamela Monk and Dennis Loiacono, and directed by Theresa Gambacorta, this play reflects upon a true event that occurred in the early years of the 20th century. Playing like an Italian melodrama, the action that unfolds is fascinating and disturbing. Taking us back more than 100 years, this play serves as a reminder that crimes of passion, and crimes of self defense know no specific eras. Man's inhumanity to man, or woman, is a constant throughout human history.

The play is about a young Sicilian teenage immigrant named Josefina Terranova, who was taken in by her aunt and uncle in the Bronx and repeatedly abused by both. She married but was rejected after her wedding when her husband learned that she was not a virgin. With nowhere else to go, Josefina returns to her aunt and uncle's home, only to murder them both to exact revenge for what they had done.

The play integrates the sensationalism of the press, wanting the trial to last as long as possible to sell more newspapers, with the prejudice that was exhibited toward Italian immigrants, and the impossible situation for women with no resources or support.

Interstitial music by Sicilian roots singer Michela Musolino lent a great feeling of authenticity.

I was drawn into the play and the story, but was somewhat distracted by a number of different problems that I am certain can be fixed. Joseph LaRocca, who played the abusive Uncle Gaetano, demonstrated that he had a strong voice, but for some reason, chose to speak in near stage whispers for much of the play, as if he were acting for film instead of theater. His accent vacillated between English with an Italian accent, to a Bronx Italian accent, so that was a bit confusing. His demeanor and physicality certainly fit the character, however.

Some of the action took place on the stage floor, and given the theater's configuration, made it difficult for most of the audience to see what was transpiring, something a director should be most cognizant of when staging the piece. And although I liked the music, it seemed to make the piece move in a staccato fashion, rather than making it flow. Perhaps it could have been used more as underscoring in the scenes, rather than standing alone in the scene changes.

The shining light of Terranova is Laura Lamberti, the actress who played Josefina. With her fiery and sympathetic performance, alternating between speaking Sicilian and English beautifully, she reminded me of an Italian Penelope Cruz, and ignited the piece.

There is one more performance on August 27th.

If you enjoy hearing Italian/Sicilian spoken, if you like a soap opera type play, and historical interpretation, go see Terranova. I would like to see this developed further for the stage, but can also envision this piece as a film. www.monrealeproductions.com

Burn the Floor... sizzles

Think of all the words that describe hot, intense and dazzling. Think of a melding of sound and light and unbridled expression. Think of dancers so proficient in all kinds of movement that their talent is astounding. Think all of that, and you've got the limited run dance spectacular, "Burn The Floor," now playing at the Longacre Theatre.

Burn the Floor is conceived, choreographed and directed by Jason Gilkison, a former world champion Latin and Ballroom dancer. The piece feautres 18 award winning international dancers from around the world. All gorgeous. Every single one. Along with the dancers, there are two featured singers who help move the piece along, as well as solo musicians, enhancing the recorded music.

The backstory of this creation is very interesting. Burn the Floor was first conceived as a special performance at Sir Elton John's 50th birthday party in 1997. Two years later, the show had it's world premiere in the UK, and went on to play around the globe.

If you are a fan of any of the reality dancing shows, this is for you. Mind you, this is not your grandmother's ballroom dancing. Sure, you see The Foxtrot, The Lindy, The Jitterbug, as well as Latin, Disco and Ballet. But the movement, the intensity, the power of these incredible performers will simply astound you. The costumes are breathtaking with many quick changes throughout the evening and amazingly no wardrobe malfunctions. When you see the amount of energy this dancing requires, think about the fact that they have two performances twice a week amongst the 8 shows.

For three weeks, featured dancers Maksim Chmerkvskiy and Karina Smirnoff of Dancing with the Stars are part of the ensemble.

Burn The Floor is a spectacle and will have you on your feet (and wanting to dance) at the end of the show.
